All vehicles are required to pay this road tax in Russia, but the amount and method of payment differ between vehicles under 12T or trucks with a maximum authorized mass of more than 12T.

How to pay road tax Russia

The road toll system in Russia is managed through toll gates, located on toll road sections, i.e. for approximately 50,774 km of federal roads.

Both vehicles with a maximum authorized mass of up to 12T and those exceeding 12T have the option to pay the Russian road tax at the toll gates. Instead, vehicles over 12T also have the option to pay through a vehicle-mounted on-board unit.

An important aspect to consider is that there is no online Russia road tax option.

Categories of vehicles

For road tax payment, there are 2 main payment categories:

  • Vehicles with a maximum authorized mass below 12T (cars, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles);
  • Vehicles with a maximum authorized mass over 12T;

To pay at toll stations on federal roads, there is the option of paying by:

  • Cash;
  • Credit card;

Road tax Russia for vehicles under 12T

If you own a vehicle with a maximum authorized mass of less than 12T, you must pay the Russian toll at toll booths located on federal roads.

Each such toll station is marked accordingly, and at each toll point, you will find a table filled out with all the toll prices.

  • M1 Belarus: the toll is approximately 38 RON per day and approximately 2 RON per day;
  • M3 Ukraine: for cars, the toll varies from 4 RON to 8.5 RON, and for commercial vehicles, between 5 RON and 11 RON;
  • M4 Don: for cars, the toll varies between 115 RON and 174 RON, and for commercial vehicles, between 145 RON and 208 RON;
  • M11 Neva: the toll varies here for cars, from 7 RON to 167 RON, depending on the road section, being much more expensive near Moscow. For commercial vehicles, it varies between 162 RON and 180 RON;
  • A113: is the central road ring for the Moscow region;

Road tax Russia for vehicles over 12T

If you are transporting in Russia with a vehicle with a maximum authorized mass of more than 12T, you have two payment options for the Russia road tax:

  • Payment by voucher

Pwhen paying for federal roads by ticket, you can pay by cash or card directly at the toll stations located and signposted on the toll road. In addition, at each toll booth there is a complete list of all prices for your vehicle category.

  • Payment by OBU (on-board unit)

If you frequently transport in Russia, choosing to mount the on-board unit is a much more cost-effective choice.

To obtain the OBU, you must register in the Platon platform. It is important to note that in order to receive the on-board unit, you will need to submit the following documents to the Russian authorities (valid for companies from another country):

  • Passport of the company’s authorized representative;
  • Vehicle registration certificate;
  • Company registration number (head office);
  • Fiscal registration certificate / CUI.

Careful! These documents must be translated into Russian and notarized in order to be sent!

I was caught without toll Russia, what do I do?

As long as you do not pay the road tax Russia or drive without the on-board unit active, you definitely risk fines from the Russian authorities:

  • For the driver of the vehicle, if you did not pay the Russian road tax or did not have a functional OBU, you will have to pay a fine of 5000 Russian rubles, that is approximately 244 RON;
  • For repeated violations where you have not paid the road tax, the fine is in the amount of 10,000 Russian rubles, i.e. approximately 488 RON.
