The Hungarian vignette is not optional on certain road sections, and its absence can bring you a “surprise” surcharge, i.e. a fine.
However, it is important to remember that the actual vignette only applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tons, the rest having to pay a road tax in Hungary. We will explain to you further, at your leisure, what each one refers to and how you can pay them off without too much effort.
How do I check if I need a Hungary vignette?
Unlike other countries where only a few road areas are tolled, the vignette in Hungary is required for most public sections.
There are, however, some toll-free routes:
- the M31 and M8 motorways, in their entirety;
- some sections of the M0 expressway – the one between the main road number 1 and the M5 highway, the section between the M4 (expressway) and the M3 highway, respectively the Megyeri bridge;
- two bypass sections – the south-west section of Pécs for the M60 motorway and the Kaposvár section for the M9 expressway;
- two express roads, on certain well-established stretches – M9, between the main road number 6 and number 51, as well as the M4 between Vecsés and the road leading to Liszt Ferenc Budapest International Airport.
Where can I physically buy the Hungary vignette?
The vignette for Hungary can be purchased physically from the territory of Romania, from gas stations near the border.
As for crossing into Hungary, there you have several options for buying the vignette, from gas stations, to travel agencies, various other distributors (https://nmzrt.hu/partnerek) and the 19 offices of the state authority.
Fortunately, the whole process is done online, you don’t need any documents and you won’t have to miss a sticker on your windshield.
You just need to know the registration number, the country of registration, the vehicle category and the validity period for which you want your Hungarian vignette.
CAREFUL! The receipt is kept for 2 years after the expiry date of the vignette.

How much does the Hungary 2024 vignette cost?

Hungary road tax for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes
As there is a vignette for vehicles up to and including 3.5 tons, those exceeding this weight pay road tax in Hungary.
The HU-GO toll for Hungary can be paid in two ways:
- OBU (On-Board Unit);
- fixed route ticket.

In which currency can the Hungary vignette be paid?
The Hungary sticker is payable in Hungarian forints (HUF).
Do I need the Hungary vignette for the trailer as well?
Yes, but only if the Hungarian vignette is for vehicle categories D2 and B2. Trailers for category D1 are included in the price of the Hungarian vignette for the vehicle.
How much is a vignette fine in Hungary?
The vignette fine or surcharge in Hungary varies depending on the vehicle category. If you pay it within 60 days, you will give about 4 times less than exceeding that period.

I was caught without a vignette in Hungary, what do I do?
As you saw a little above, you pay it within 60 days. That is if you don’t want to empty your piggy bank.
However, you have time in the first 60 minutes of the journey to pay the motorway toll in Hungary. Only after that period do you risk being held accountable.
Note that the fine may be lower if you were caught without the appropriate vignette for your vehicle category. You will actually have to pay the price difference between the two types of vignettes.
